Children may qualify for two primary Social Security–related programs:
Children may qualify for SSDI benefits if they have severe physical or mental disabilities that cause marked and severe limitations expected to last at least one year or result in death, or if a parent receiving SSDI is disabled, retired, or deceased with sufficient work credits.
To be eligible for child SSDI benefits, a child must meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) definition of disability for children:
The SSA evaluates disability through listed conditions in the Blue Book, which includes disorders such as congenital anomalies (e.g., Down syndrome), musculoskeletal problems, sensory impairments (vision or hearing loss), neurological disorders, respiratory, cardiovascular, and mental/developmental conditions (autism, intellectual disabilities, mood disorders). If the child’s condition does not precisely meet a listing, SSA assesses functional equivalence using six domains: acquiring information, attending and completing tasks, interacting with others, moving and handling objects, self-care, and health/physical well-being

Children may also qualify for SSDI dependent benefits if a parent is receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits, or if a deceased parent had sufficient credits:

Financial Considerations
SSDI benefits based on a parent’s work record do not have income restrictions. However, if the claim is through SSI, household income and resources may be counted using deeming rules, where a portion of parental income is considered available to the child The United States Social Security Administration+1.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to maintain comprehensive and current records and consult Social Security representatives or specialized disability attorneys to assist with the application process and maximize approval chances.
